Extreme Makeover Kirkland Washington

Cascade News

Cascade Pest Control donates services to family in need of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Seattle, WA, October 9, 2007 – Continuing a tradition of providing joy and relief to unsuspecting families—as well as good drama with a message of compassion to American viewers—the award-winning ABC-TV hit series, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” came to the Greater Seattle area. And Cascade got to provide extreme pest control.

Cascade, an award-winning pest control company in the Greater Seattle area, donated its services to a deserving family as part of the makeover of their home. Cascade’s job was primarily to provide rodent control, rats being a major problem in the Puget Sound region. Rodents spread disease and other contamination—and are also responsible for damage from gnawing—even known to cause fires as a result of chewing through electrical insulation. Often even after they are gone the contamination leaves a home ruined, their urine, feces, chewing and damaged insulation in walls and attics left behind. This means that besides ‘pest control measures,’ clean-up, repair and disinfecting is required.

A family in the Highlands neighborhood of Kirkland was selected by ABC as the “hero family” for the Extreme Makeover Home Edition show. The family—Connie Chapin and her four children, were nominated by friends and neighbors. They live in an old house from which Connie operates “Anglefish Swimming” as a home occupation. Due to “life circumstances” she could not keep up with the home’s maintenance leaving it with significant structural defects.

The makeover involved demolition of the single-family residence, detached garage and swimming pool from which she works…and replaced with a 3,500 square foot home, a 900 square foot garage and new swimming pool. The work took about 700 volunteers, 100 construction hours over seven days, the Building Industry Association of Washington and the show’s crew.

As quoted in the Seattle Post Intelligencer, Daimon Doyle, Building Industry Association President and lead builder, “I’ve got small companies donating thousands of dollars worth of material and labor, and then asking what they can do.”

As the family was away on vacation their existing home was demolished and a new one constructed. The ordeal was named “Project 511” as the story will be aired as the 11th episode of the 5th season of the Extreme Makeover show. This particular episode will be aired within 4 to 6 weeks after completion (October 3rd, 2007.) The show airs on Sunday, 8 p.m., ABC, Channel 4.
